Proper planning of vanity tops – edges, drill holes, and height
A solid wood vanity top adds warmth and naturalness to any bathroom. To ensure that the result is both visually appealing and functional, three points are crucial: the choice of edge type, suitable drill holes and cutouts, and the correct mounting height.
Selection of edge type
For a wooden vanity top, you can choose between two edge types.
The straight edge appears modern and clear, while the live edge emphasizes the natural character of the wood. For a guest toilet, a narrower vanity top is often suitable, as it appears lighter and takes up less space.
A carefully oiled wooden vanity top remains beautiful for a long time due to its water-resistant surface. If you value naturalness, solid wood vanity tops are the best choice – they are robust, repairable, and retain their unique grain for many years.
Drill holes and cutouts
For installation, precise drill holes and cutouts must be made in the vanity top for countertop basins. These include openings for the drain, faucet, and possibly electrical outlets or wall brackets.
When placing a washbasin on a wooden top, it is important that there is moisture-resistant sealing around the drill holes. This prevents water from penetrating the wood. The vanity top should also be oiled all around to ensure lasting protection. You can inquire about the drill holes directly here before purchasing.
Tip: If you are attaching a countertop basin to a wooden top, make sure the screws are only lightly tightened – wood expands and contracts and needs some clearance. However, this does not apply to the screws in the wall. These must be tightened firmly.
At what height should it be mounted?
The correct vanity top height depends on body height and usage.
The standard washbasin height in Germany is approximately 85 to 90 cm from the top edge of the floor to the top edge of the basin.
For a modern countertop basin, the height of the countertop basin must also be taken into account so that the top edge of the basin remains comfortable.
A good guideline for the height of the vanity top for countertop basins is 80 cm to 85 cm for the top itself – the basin then sits on top of it.
This creates a comfortable mounting height for the vanity unit, where all family members feel comfortable.
In small rooms, such as in a guest toilet with a wooden vanity top, the mounting can be a little lower to create more visual space.
The ideal washbasin height in the bathroom is therefore always an interplay of design, comfort, and functionality.
